PLAY 2 WIN is a limited edition series coinciding with a larger installation of “scratch-off” works by Billie Clarken, titled “You Oughta Be In Pictures”. In these works, Clarken reframes images from banned issues of Abercrombie and Fitch Quarterly by completely silk screening over the surface with a silver scratch-off paint.
“Abercrombie’s advertising images signify the desire to be chosen, to be casted, to be the main character. To be cheered on and lusted after by an audience. A&F sold fantasy to average people, like competitive game shows. And for everyone else- they watched.”
Clarken uses alternative printing practices to point out the triumphs and tragedy of illusions, and the theater walls in which reality television and consumer goods are staged in. PLAY 2 WIN is a collaboration with the player and artist in deciphering the extent of society’s need for fantasy, enticing collectors of the edition series with the freedom to gamble one’s own deconstruction of these images.
